Windows 7 - Part 2

Geek On!

For the grand release of Windows 7, Burger Kings in Japan offered this monster. There may have been some reward for eating the whole thing (besides heart disease, that is), but I am not sure. In addition to this, Microsoft was encouraging prospective users to hold launch parties. Hosts would receive one copy of Windows 7 and a bunch of party swag for free. They had to promise to invite a minimum number of people. Both of these examples are to illustrate just how big this event was for Microsoft. However, those who have been paying attention for the past 10-15 years may feel a little let down. A windows release used to be a major event. My opinion: With the massive failures of Vista (both real and fabricated) caused MS to tone it down a bit.

Windows 7 - First Thoughts

Geek On!

I have been running the beta and then the RC of Windows 7 since Microsoft started releasing them. So, it was no big shock once I got the RTM (Release to Market, or the retail version) installed this weekend on my home computer. I thought I would impart some of the more interesting points on my unconventional install and the new OS as a whole. And, for good measure, I will include plenty of my own opinion (or as I like to call it, cold-hard facts).

I will probably break this up into 2-3 different posts just to keep it readable. In this first post, I want to talk about my use of the beta and RC versions and how I got Windows 7 for $30. And yes, you do get what you pay for, and I'll tell you why.

Add bluetooth to your HF rig

Geek On!Sometimes I can't wait to see the comments when I write stuff. I'm going to describe how I added a bluetooth interface to my HF rig so I can operate hands free, and especially keep an ear on what is happening.

Why Gmail rocks!

Geek On!As some of you have experienced first hand, I am a huge gmail fan. I believe it to be the best email client out there. And to further prove my ramblings, Google has released the Gmail Custom Time.

Hey there....It's your modem. Remember me?

Geek On!

We shared many hours of experimental fun together. We were the original internet. Electronic Bulletin Boards were our playground. Oh, the things we downloaded together. Who could live without the plain text version of the Anarchist's Cookbook (even if it was never the complete copy)? We experienced brilliant art in the form of ASCII symbols that portrayed our favorite characters and even some risqu'e pictures. Together, we connected with our friends over the telephone lines, chatting back in forth. We learned that having call waiting was just plain dumb, as it interrupted our time together.

IPTV 101

Geek On!With all of the recent talk about digital TV around here, I figured I would introduce another avenue of television delivery. This one is referred to as IPTV, or Internet Protocol Television. In this article I will introduce those that are not familiar with this budding technology to what is going on now and what is yet to come.

G33k 0n! Intro

Geek On!Alright folks, it is time to unveil my new topic, G33k 0n!.

So, why the need for a new topic? Well, as most of you know, I am "in the business", as they say, but also this is my other passion. I've been in front of some sort of computer since I was 6 years old. In fact, this is how Jay and I first met and became friends. So, without computers, I may have never made it to radio. By this time, I had upgraded from The TI-99 that started this lust of technology, to the Commodore C64. There was a local Commodore club that my mom took me too in da 'hood of Hopewell. For some reason, Thomas Rolfe Court was the Silicon Valley of Hopewell.
