Propagation report

DX WorldFor some reason, there was no DX bulletin issued this weekend, but I do have
the propagation report. Have a good weekend and try to brush the dust off of
your rig.

We soon may be talking about a day or two without sunspots as the
norm, perhaps when looking at a preceding month -- quite the
opposite of noting the few days with sunspots. It seems like a long
time ago because of the long strings of spotless days. We saw eight
days in a row with visible sunspots around mid-October, followed by
another eight days around the start of November, then after just
three days of no spots. By the end of today -- Friday, November 14
-- we may see five straight days, possibly followed by more.

DXing the FM band from 36,000 feet

Everything ElseI took my portable MP3 player with me on Sunday while on an outbound flight from Richmond to St Louis. I intended to play some study material that I have loaded on it to help pass the time on the plane. Shortly before take off, I realized that the MP3 player also had an FM tuner on it. I knew it would be a fun ride across the country.

WA4FC/B 10 meter beacon

Please click here to submit your reception report. We appreciate each report that is sent along. Please be sure to include date, time, QTH, and your station details.

The beacon consists of the following hardware:

Radio Shack HTX-100 (7 watt output) - operating 28.231 mhz
Picokeyer (imbedded inside of radio)
Par Electronics End Fedz EF-10 (end fed dipole) at 50 feet facing NE / SW
RG-8X (apx 40 feet run)

The beacon is located at:
N 37 19.' 27" x W 77 25'25"
FM17GH in Chesterfield County

The beacon is operational 24 hours a day (except for when the control op wants to get on the higher HF bands). The message sent is VVV de WA4FC/B WA4FC/B WA4FC/B FM17 FM17. This is sent at 12wpm over a 46 second time period, followed by a 20 second pause to allow for reception of other beacons that may possibly be on the frequency.

The WA4FC 10 meter beacon officially became operational on October 9, 2008.

We had thought for several years about putting beacons on the air to help with the study of propagation, and things just started falling into place. Those responsible for the project include KD4BPZ and KG4SNN. More pictures can be found in the photo gallery about this project and this article about constructing this beacon.. Don't forget to listen for our 6 meter beacon as well.
